TWO RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS EXPLORE OPTIONS FOR CARBON DIOXIDE
BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota Industrial Commission (Commission) has awarded $520,890 in Renewable Energy Program matching funds for two projects that enhance renewable energy while providing options for underground storage of carbon dioxide.
Seismic Survey to Advance Potential for CO2 Storage in Eastern ND
Awardee: Midwest AgEnergy Group
Amount Awarded: $324,640
Total Project Costs: $629,280
To achieve a greater understanding of the potential for safe and permanent carbon dioxide (CO2) storage in deep saline formations in eastern North Dakota, this project will collect and analyze data to better characterize the subsurface geological features in Stutsman and Barnes counties. Ethanol producers and other entities that emit carbon dioxide have strong incentives to permanently sequester CO2 if suitable injection zones can be economically reached.
In a joint statement the Commission said, “North Dakota is committed to finding innovative, economic solutions to continue using the state’s vast resources in an increasingly carbon constrained environment. This project will empower businesses to make informed decisions on the viability of geological sequestration in east-central North Dakota.”
Project Phoenix
Awardee: Incoho Consulting Group & Newlight Technology
Amount Awarded: $196,250
Total Project Costs: $392,500
This project will assess and evaluate potential locations that optimize North Dakota resources based on their availability, sustainability and economic viability for one or more plants that will manufacture Newlight’s proprietary, patented, bio-degradable plastic alternative, which is currently commercially available as single-use cutlery and straws.
In a joint statement the Commission said, “This project is an important first step toward establishing manufacturing facilities that will utilize renewable energy and provide market diversification for the state’s gas and carbon dioxide feedstocks.”
The North Dakota Industrial Commission, consisting of Gov. Doug Burgum as chairman, Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem and Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring, oversees the Renewable Energy Program.
The Legislature established the program in 2007 to provide funding for research, development, marketing and education to foster growth of renewable energy including wind, biofuels, biomass, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and hydrogen.
The next application deadline for the program is Feb. 1, 2022.
