The Lignite Research, Development and Marketing Program is accepting applications for grant round 106. The deadline for submitting applications for consideration is February 14, 2025. Applications may be submitted via email at ndicgrants@nd.gov.
The next meeting of the Lignite Research Council, which assists the Industrial Commission in administering the program, will be held in March at a date and location to be determined.
The program is a multi-million-dollar public/private partnership that funds research and development projects to preserve and enhance the development of North Dakota’s lignite resources. The program is funded from coal severance tax, coal conversion tax, and oil and gas tax revenues, with approximately $7.5 million available each year. Since 1987 when the partnership began, the state has invested more than $139 million in lignite research funds. Over 250 projects have received funding, with a total project value exceeding $2.5 billion.
Any person, corporation, partnership, cooperative, association, or consortium of such parties is eligible to apply for lignite research, development and marketing funding. Funds are required to be matched by private dollars. More information about the program may be found on the Industrial Commission’s website at: https://www.nd.gov/ndic/.
