The North Dakota Industrial Commission approved $11.4 million in Lignite Research, Development and Marketing Program matching grants for seven new research projects. The funding, generated from lignite severance tax as well as oil and gas production tax revenue, supports the growth of North Dakota’s lignite industry through research and education.

BISMARCK, N.D. – The state-owned Bank of North Dakota (BND) reported total record assets of $10.2 billion at year-end
2022. The growth enabled the Bank to increase its loan portfolio to a record $5.4 billion in loans to the state’s farmers and
ranchers, business owners and students in North Dakota. In addition, the Bank reported a record profit of $191.2 million in
2022, up $47 million from 2021.

North Dakota’s regulatory framework for geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide continues to lead the nation as the North Dakota Industrial Commission today approved its fourth carbon capture and storage facility. North Dakota was the first state to receive primacy of Class VI wells from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2018.

On May 23, 2023, North Dakota joined three other states and two tribal nations in receiving the first Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grants from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). North Dakota was awarded $7.5 million, which will be administered by the North Dakota Industrial Commission through its Transmission Authority. The Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grant program aims to ensure the reliability of power sector infrastructure so that communities have access to affordable, reliable, clean electricity.

Industrial Commission Announces Summer 2023 Grant Round Schedule for Clean Sustainable Energy Authority, Outdoor Heritage Fund, Renewable Energy Program, and Oil and Gas Research Council. 

This order issued on the basis that the Governor is vested with the Executive authority pursuant to Article V, Section 1 or the North Dakota Constitution, and pursuant to NDCC 54-17.5-02. This order shall be effective Immediately and supersedes and replaces Executive Order 2013-05; accordingly, Executive Order 2013-05 is hereby rescinded. 

BISMARCK, ND – The North Dakota Industrial Commission has approved North Dakota Housing Finance Agency’s (NDHFA) planned distribution of $200,000 through its Helping Housing Across North Dakota (Helping HAND) program.

The next meeting of the Lignite Research Council has been scheduled for 1:30 pm on May 11, 2023. The meeting will be held in Room 335, Bismarck State College National Energy Center of Excellence, 1200 Schafer Street, Bismarck, ND. The Council will consider grant applications for its 102nd grant round. The deadline for submitting applications for consideration at the May 11th meeting is April 3, 2023. The North Dakota Industrial Commission approved $2.8 million in Oil and Gas Research and Renewable Energy Program matching grants for six new research projects. The funding, generated from oil and gas production tax revenue, supports the growth of North Dakota’s oil and gas industry through research and education. The Renewable Energy Program supports the research and development of industrial technologies such as renewable energy, biofuels, biomass, biomaterials, geothermal and renewable hydrogen.

The North Dakota Industrial Commission approved funding last week for a new lignite research project, titled "Lignite Resource Evaluation for Advanced Utilization Opportunities," that focuses on evaluating the potential for extracting rare earth elements and other critical minerals from North Dakota lignite.
